My Writing Process… a series.

Hello! I get a lot of questions about writing books and how I do it, so I thought I’d share my process. Every writer is different, but here’s a peek behind the scenes of my process. So get ready for a wild ride through the ups and downs of writer’s block, coffee addiction, and characters who refuse to cooperate!😜

We start with Ideation: Without an idea, there’s no book! I need to answer things like… Who is the main character? (Most of the time I have the main character in mind first, then everything else follows.) What should the story be about? Who is the antagonist? Love interest? What does the main character want or have to overcome? Some of this comes to me without even trying, but some of it is like trying to catch a unicorn with a butterfly net.🦄 But when the spark ignites, it’s game on!

My brain won’t leave it alone. I think about it all the time. I even daydream or actually dream about it! I looked for inspiration everywhere. If I’m out and about, I watch how people interact with each other or how they are when they’re alone. (Psst… If you’re ever in public and someone staring at you with a far-off/zoned-out look in their eyes, they’re probably a writer!)

Watching people interact with each other helps me with ideas on how I want my characters to act or react with each other. Believe it or not, ‘people watching’ helps me expand on ideas and come up with new ones. Everyday life happens to imaginary people on the page, so I need to make them and their story as relatable as possible, even if they’re vampires, banshees, or shifters!

Once I have enough of an idea to write a summary (a few paragraphs), it’s time for a little research!

I’ll go over that process in the next blog! Until then, Happy Reading!😊

Kimberly Quay

Kimberly Quay has loved romance & fantasy as far back as she can remember. Her childhood home was full of fantasy, romance, and thriller books and movies. Born and raised in Florida, she spent most of her youth outside searching for fairies and hoping to meet (and fall in love with) a vampire.

Author of (spicy) contemporary romance, (steamy) paranormal shifter romance, and (thrilling) urban fantasy, she’s a sucker for a good rom-com and she’s fascinated by old graveyards. When she’s not working on her next novel, she’s reading or kicking her husband’s butt in darts.

Kimberly still loves reading. Especially Nora Roberts and Kim Harrison.
