My Writing Process… Outlining.
Hello! I get a lot of questions about writing and how I do it, so I thought I'd share my process. Every writer is different, but here's a peek behind the scenes of my process. Join me as I navigate the treacherous waters of plot twists, grammatical errors, and deadline panic!
Today is about my least favorite part… Outlining: This is where I plan the journey of the book. Think of it like a map for a treasure hunt, but instead of treasure, you'll find plot twists.
Some people use programs or websites to organize their outline. I’ve tried a few different software programs to help me plot it out, but I always end up with a bulleted list on a Word doc.🤷♀️
My outline/plot is usually not as structured as others may like because sometimes… a lot of times when I’m writing, things don’t go as I’d planned, but with at least a rough outline, I have an idea of what I’m doing!
Someone who plots/outlines is known as a… wait for it… a plotter! Someone who sits down and just starts writing is called a pantser. I am somewhere in between the two because I’m often a plotter who gets pants by their characters!
Yeah, I created the characters, but they tend to develop minds of their own! I want them to do one thing and they decide they’d rather do another. And like a spoiled nephew/niece, they often get their way. What can I say? I’m a pushover for my imaginary babies.
Next up is the main event: WRITING! I’ll go over that process in the next week! Until then, Happy Reading!
